Welcome to the official website of the Race, Culture and Equality Working Group (RACE) of the RGS-IBG.

We are a collective of scholars and other interested publics whose research focuses on issues of race, racial inequality, colonialism, decoloniality and whiteness etc. We founded the group to encourage, promote and facilitate research, teaching and positive action on race. In particular, we seek to address the contradiction between the breadth of geographical scholarship on race and postcolonialism, and the failure to address race relations and racial inequality within the discipline itself.

RACE seeks to bring together UK geographers to collaborate at the national level, as well as make connections with international geographers and other disciplines. Overall, it foregrounds the silencing of racial oppression within the geographical discipline, explores its effects and promotes greater racial equality.

We always welcome new members. Please get in touch with Dr James Esson, or contact the convenor of the subgroup that you are interested in joining.
